Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is a health specialty used to improve a patient’s quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, physical intervention, and patient education. Physical Therapy is helpful to individuals who experience decreased or impaired strength, balance, endurance, pain and mobility. The purpose of PT is to restore the person’s functional independence as it relates to mobility. In order to accomplish this goal, the Physical Therapist will provide the patient with a customized plan of theraputic interventions focused on decreasing pain, increasing range of motion, strength training, gait (ambulation) training, and working to improve balance and coordination to the prior level of independence.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is a health specialty that uses assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful activities of an individual within their living environment and/or community. Occupational Therapists utilize skilled interventions, techniques, strategies, and methods to improve the skills necessary for living independent and fulfilled lives. The ideal outcome through occupational therapy is to empower people to participate in desired occupations or activities on an everyday basis, by restoring physical function (i.e. strength, balance, endurance, coordination). This may include modifying one’s environment with specialized equipment or implementing adaptive techniques and strategies that enable individuals to expand activity participation and increase independence resulting in a higher quality of life.

Speech Therapy

Speech Language Pathology (SLP, ST) is a health specialty that specializes in speech and language disorders, cognitive-communicative disorders, and voice and swallowing impairments. Individuals who may benefit from speech therapy experience cognitive deficits (i.e. loss of memory, problem solving skills) or the inability to communicate effectively (i.e. the ability to comprehend or express oral or written language) and the articulation of words. One’s ability to swallow also falls under the scope of practice for a Speech Therapist. For example, if left untreated a person, who has a condition in which the ability to chew and swallow food safely is affected, may run a higher risk of choking when eating or drinking.

My success may not be what you consider a success. However, since starting therapy I am making some progress and continue to make more every day. I have been walking more and more and we have even done the stairs. They give me lots of exercise too.
— Shelia F, 86
Therapy has helped me to reduce my dependence on using a walker and cane. I have increased my confidence and reduced my largely unfounded fear of falling. The exercises introduced are easily done and the therapy has really help me a lot. After two Knee replacements and one hip replacement I am finally feeling my confidence return.
